Vacation Video Secrets (June 24, 2007)

The secret to shooting great vacation video is understanding what will make it interesting to OTHER people – after all, you want an audience for your work, whether family, friends, or YouTube.

VideoMaker’s Kyle Cassidy advises starting with a shot plan, such as filming the places you stay as well as the tourist attractions. Have a storyline, such as your honeymoon, kids’ first Europe trip, or African wildlife adventure, and shoot plenty of extra footage – you should leave at least half on the cutting room floor. Some specific tips:

  • In a scenic location, don’t just take wide shots or pan back and forth. Get close-up detail shots as well as unusual camera angles, such as from ground level or from a high point like your hotel balcony. Limit zooms to one per shot.
  • Involve people. Nobody is interested in seeing yet another shot of the Eiffel Tower. What will grab them are your kids’ reactions to it, your attempts at speaking French, your meal in the restaurant at the top.
  • Film yourself! Don’t forget to hand the camera off on occasion, or even do a video diary at the end of each day.
  • Pick up some local music along the way, and then use it as a soundtrack to your production.

Restaurant Math (June 22, 2007)

1   First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to go out to eat.
(more than once but less than 10)
2   Multiply this number by 2
3   Add 5
4   Multiply it by 50
5   If you have already had your birthday this year add 1757 ....
If you haven't, add 1756
6   Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.
7   You should have a three digit number
The first digit of this was your original number
(how many times you want to go out to restaurants in a week.)
The next two numbers are YOUR AGE
